Rowan was nine when Beacon showed Brinegate a loyal face, betrayed it, and left the harbor burning. Rowan survived beneath the floorboards. His mother did not.
Years later, he sails aboard the Low Wake under Noll, the man who taught him to read wreckage, lies, and men. Noll carries Rowan where the evidence leads. He does not always approve of what Rowan does when they arrive.
When the Mercy Bell fails to make harbor, others blame the storm. Rowan reads the wreckage and knows the storm did not sink her. The trail leads to Grinner, an oathsworn man who betrayed the face he showed the world.
A False-Revealed. Rowan proves what Grinner did. Then he takes his mask.

Instead, other broken oaths find their way to the Low Wake. Each hunt gives Rowan proof. Each judgment leaves another mask hanging in the hold. Noll keeps asking whether proof and justice are the same.
